Why the Pediatric Night Brace is an Essential Part of the Mikki Device Kit

The Mikki Device kit offers a comprehensive solution to effectively treat foot conditions that can impact a child’s mobility and comfort. The Pediatric Night Brace plays a crucial role in this treatment plan by providing targeted support for the following conditions:

  • Toe Walking: For children who exhibit idiopathic toe gait (toe walking), the Pediatric Night Brace is recommended to be worn for 6 to 12 months, 7 to 8 hours each night. It gently stretches and aligns the foot, helping to correct toe walking behavior.

  • Sever’s Disease: For children with acute or chronic Sever’s disease, the Pediatric Night Brace is recommended to be worn for 6 to 8 weeks, 7 to 8 hours each night. It provides passive stretching of the Achilles tendon, reducing heel pain and inflammation.

The breathable fabric and padded liner of the splint ensure a comfortable and secure fit, making it easier for children to adhere to the treatment plan. Please note that the night brace for Sever’s is not intended for ambulation (walking) and should only be worn while the child is resting or sleeping.

Proper Wearing of the Brace

Proper brace fit is important for achieving results and your child’s comfort. Please follow these instructions when applying your Pediatric Night Brace:

  1. Unfasten the 3 front straps
  2. While seated, position your child’s foot onto the foot plate with the heel to the back.
  3. Secure the straps firmly without overtightening. The brace should fit snugly but not cause pain.
  4. Some toes may extend past the brace – this is normal as long as the heel is fitted securely.

The Pediatric Night Brace is designed for overnight stretch and is not intended for walking.

Wondering About Toe Position?

To get the most out of the Mikki Device™ Pediatric Night Brace, it’s essential to position your child’s foot correctly within the brace. For both toe walking and Sever’s disease, we aim to position the ball of the foot in a specific spot to ensure optimal support and effectiveness.

It’s perfectly normal if your child’s toes extend beyond the end of the brace; in fact, this allows the brace to maintain a 90-degree angle for effective stretching throughout the night. The primary goal here is to hold the foot securely at this angle, providing a gentle, passive stretch that works on the Achilles tendon overnight. So, while the toes may appear to “hang off” the edge, rest assured the brace is designed to work this way for maximum comfort and therapeutic impact.
